Located approximately 60 km to the west of Wakkanai is Japan's most northerly island, Rebun.
With scenic views that include alpine vegetation blooming on the coast at sea level,
the island is often referred to as the "flower island".

Access

Approximately 300 varieties of alpine vegetation bloom on Rebun island.
Among them is the famous Rebun Large-flowered Cypripedium, an endemic species known as “the queen of orchids”, which blooms from late May to mid-June. In Japan, the large-flowered Cypripedium is called the “Atsumori-so”, and is named after the horo (armored cloak to protect against arrow attacks from the rear) worn by the samurai Taira no Atsumori, which the flower resembles. The distinctive appearance of the pretty flower has continued to fascinate countless people.

There are numerous footpaths on the island, enabling visitors to enjoy the communities of alpine plants and the island’s beautiful scenery at their leisure.
